Repellents: protection from mosquitoes and ticks for city, field, and duty
Mosquito repellent and tick repellent are the first line of defense outdoors and in town. At our Kyiv store you’ll find sprays, lotions, roll-ons, and clothing treatments; we ship fast across Ukraine. For tougher routes, combine mosquito and tick protection with insecticidal treatment of clothing and gear.
How they work & common formats
-
On skin (repellents): DEET 10–50%, picaridin/icaridin 10–25%, IR3535, lemon-eucalyptus oil. These are effective repellents for mosquitoes and midges and also repellents against ticks when applied correctly.
-
On clothing (insecticides): permethrin fabric treatment creates a “no-landing zone” — a proven combo of insecticides and repellents.
-
Formats: spray, lotion, roll-on, cream; for camp use pair a mosquito spray with area fumigation where appropriate.
Real-world performance
-
DEET 30–50%: ~6–8 h vs mosquitoes, up to ~4 h vs midges; works as a repellent against ticks with scheduled re-application.
-
Picaridin 20–25%: low odor, sweat-resistant, ~6–8 h — often the best mosquito repellent for sensitive skin.
-
IR3535 20–35%: gentler urban/child options, up to ~6 h.
-
Permethrin 0.5% on fabric: effective for weeks or ~4–6 washes — ideal insect protection in the wild.
Choose by scenario
-
City/parks: neutral insect repellent with 20% picaridin or IR3535.
-
Forest/field: DEET 30–50% plus insecticides for mosquitoes (permethrin) on uniform and gear.
-
Fishing/dusk: stronger mosquito repellents; add head net and light-colored clothing.
-
Camp/bivouac: pair mosquito and tick repellents with treatment of cuffs, hems, tents.
Application guide
-
Apply a thin, even layer to exposed skin; for the face, spray hands first, then spread.
-
Reapply as directed — sweat and rain shorten repellent action.
-
Treat clothing/gear with permethrin separately; let it dry fully before use.
-
Kids: favor IR3535/lower concentrations. Duty use: full-strength DEET/picaridin.
Special notes
-
Bedbug repellent: use domestic insecticides designed for indoor control — not field sprays.
-
Against midges/flies/horseflies: DEET/picaridin formulas work; expect more frequent top-ups in heavy swarms.
