• On skin (repellents): DEET 10–50%, picaridin/icaridin 10–25%, IR3535, lemon-eucalyptus oil. These are effective repellents for mosquitoes and midges and also repellents against ticks when applied correctly.

• On clothing (insecticides): permethrin fabric treatment creates a “no-landing zone” — a proven combo of insecticides and repellents.

• Formats: spray, lotion, roll-on, cream; for camp use pair a mosquito spray with area fumigation where appropriate.

Real-world performance

• DEET 30–50%: ~6–8 h vs mosquitoes, up to ~4 h vs midges; works as a repellent against ticks with scheduled re-application.

• Picaridin 20–25%: low odor, sweat-resistant, ~6–8 h — often the best mosquito repellent for sensitive skin.

• IR3535 20–35%: gentler urban/child options, up to ~6 h.

• Permethrin 0.5% on fabric: effective for weeks or ~4–6 washes — ideal insect protection in the wild.

Choose by scenario

• City/parks: neutral insect repellent with 20% picaridin or IR3535.

• Forest/field: DEET 30–50% plus insecticides for mosquitoes (permethrin) on uniform and gear.

• Fishing/dusk: stronger mosquito repellents; add head net and light-colored clothing.

• Camp/bivouac: pair mosquito and tick repellents with treatment of cuffs, hems, tents.

Application guide

1. Apply a thin, even layer to exposed skin; for the face, spray hands first, then spread.

2. Reapply as directed — sweat and rain shorten repellent action.

3. Treat clothing/gear with permethrin separately; let it dry fully before use.

4. Kids: favor IR3535/lower concentrations. Duty use: full-strength DEET/picaridin.
